If you turning the leverers so that all of the trenches get the same amount of water, then this should be good.  While some might disagree, I think that a true drop-box system leads to problems in many systems.  This is because the trenches become saturated from the top down and only when the last trench fails do you know you have a problem.  Equalizing the water flow should help maintain the system in good shape.
