It is not entirely unusual for drainfield problems to become more apparent during the spring after the winter freeze and snow cover melts. The ground is saturated and the water level in the drainfield is more than the ground can handle if the drainfield is partially clogged anyway. The water which refilled the septic tank came from the drainfield. Septic Scrub(TM) drainfield flow restorer can help restore flow to your drainfield. In Michigan you probably have a header system. That is you do not have a distribution box, but the line that comes from the septic tank goes into the drainfield and drainage lines come off of this header line to distribute the water into the drainfield. This type of system generally does not have access to the drainfield. The drainfield is the most expensive part of your septic system. Without any access, you cannot monitor the condition of this part of your system. I recommend that you have a riser installed between the septic tank and the drainfield. Cut the line before the drainfield and install a "T" with a riser of 6 inch pipe which rises to within a couple of inches of the surface. Put a cap on this. This riser allows you to monitor the water levels in the drainfield. If you see water standing in the lines, you should do something quickly. I would recommend this even if you choose not to treat your drainfield with Septic Scrub. After you have installed the riser, you also have a convenient method of adding Septic Scrub. The clogging mat in the drainfield is at the bottom of the stone layer where the stone and soil meet. Generally the biomat and the first couple of inches of the soil become clogged with the black sludge from the anaerobic bacteria which flush through from the septic tank. This black sludge is mostly metal sulfides. Another by-product of these bacteria is a polysaccharide. The net effect of these products is to slow the flow of water and to scavage oxygen. This prevents the drainfield and biomat from being aerobic. Septic Scrub oxidizes the sulfides and polysaccahrides while releasing oxygen and helping restore the drainfield to areobic conditions. the best way to apply Septic Scrub is to pump the water from the drainfield down to the stone soil interface. This allows the Septic Scrub to get down to the bottom of the drainfield quickly and react. Pumping can be done through a posthole in the drainfield down through the stone to the soil below.
